Boost for hospice
St Peter's Hospice is this year's half marathon official charity. Fundraising manager John Flanagan tells David Clensy why this is an important opportunity for the organisation
An ominous moment kickstarts each financial year when St Peter's Hospice fundraising manager John Flanagan realises a minimum of £5 million needs to be raised in the coming 12 months.

With 80 per cent of the funding for Bristol's hospice charity coming from donations, it's quite a challenge.
But John, who lost his own twin sister to breast cancer, knows first hand what an important role the hospice plays.
"It's really not just a place where people come to die," he says.
"It's about ensuring a quality of life during a time which is often the most difficult moment in our lives.
"The hospice is a very professional organisation that offers real support and care, offering guidance and addressing the fears of patients and families."
This year, St Peter's Hospice is the official charity for the Reebok Bristol Half Marathon, with 400 St Peter's supporters running in aid of the hospice.
"We also have 150 St Peter's Hospice volunteers acting as marshals along the course throughout the event," John says.
"All our volunteer fundraisers do such wonderful work I'd like to thank them all for helping us so much. This is our 30th anniversary year so it's wonderful to get the opportunity to be the official charity.
"As well as giving our fundraising efforts a boost, it should also help us to inform the people of Bristol about the work we do and the role we play in the city."

“It is great to see a local charity do well out of a this event. St Peters is a fantastic organisation and deserves all the support it gets. I try to do my bit by collecting for them when I can and I meet so many people who have been helped one way or another by this charity. Well done John & the team for organising the marshals, you all did a fantastic job!”
