HUNDREDS of Bristol University students were told to stay away from halls of residence in Stoke Bishop after claims that bombs had been hidden in them.

Students were told not to return to or visit Wills Hall in Parry's Lane, home to 330 people, and Durdham Hall in Hollybush Lane, where 223 students live, yesterday afternoon while the threats were investigated.

An e-mail was sent to all students at the university at 3.30pm by Lynn Robinson, the university's deputy registrar for education and students.

University spokesman David Alder said: "Having received the message we obviously had to treat the matter extremely seriously and so, after contacting the police, we secured the two buildings concerned and contacted our students to alert them to the situation and ask them to avoid the area."
