Bristol City players and fans will have a spare weekend after the Robins were dumped out of the FA Cup and were then unable to fill the fourth-round void with a rearranged league match against Doncaster.

Eager to ease a fixture backlog, City tried to rearrange their Coca-Cola Championship clash with Rovers, cancelled last Saturday thanks to sub-zero temperatures, for the weekend of January 24.

But following Doncaster's 0-0 FA Cup third-round draw at Cheltenham Town, the Keepmoat Stadium could yet host a fourth-round tie that weekend, leaving City's match to be scheduled for Tuesday, February 17 (7.45pm) – a midweek round- trip of 370 miles, which is likely to curtail some of City's travelling support.

Robins' boss Gary Johnson has also explored bringing forward City's trip to Plymouth, but the local police prohibited switching the match from Tuesday January 27.

Instead, the players will most likely be called in for training – a weekend off or a trip away being unlikely at this stage of the season.

In the meantime, Johnson has to rally his side to face league leaders Wolves, turning his team's attention back to their Championship challenge.

"I don't think it was a fair scoreline," said Johnson, reflecting on City's defeat against Portsmouth. "With a little bit of luck and better judgement from a couple of people, maybe we could have come out as winners ourselves. I've told the boys I was very pleaed with them and now we've got to go and beat Wolves on Saturday.

"It's a fantastic game for us. It's a massive three points as we want to now get ourselves up the table."

A third win on the bounce in the league could propel City two places up the league to 11th and leave them well-positioned to challenge for the play-offs.
