Blackwell may be needed for his spin
IAN BLACKWELL has been recalled to the Somerset squad for tonight's Pro40 League Division One clash against Worcestershire.
The all-rounder has not featured in the 40-over competition so far this season but could do so under floodlights at Taunton this evening (4.40pm).
Blackwell recently scored a valuable hundred in the County Championship draw with Hampshire but sat out the Pro40 derby with Gloucestershire the following day.
Despite a total of 333-4 and a record league score of 184 from Marcus Trescothick, Gloucestershire won by 12 runs on the Duckworth-Lewis method when heavy rain forced an early close.
Director of cricket Brian Rose said: "We will add Ian Blackwell to the squad that played on Saturday because we may need his spin bowling."
Fellow all-rounder Pete Trego was 12th man in the Gloucestershire game and could also earn a recall to the XI after his 51-ball 58 and three wickets at the Rose Bowl.
Rose said: "The Gloucestershire game was a shock for everybody. You have to give credit to Gloucestershire for staying ahead of the Duckworth-Lewis par score.
"Everybody knew the rain was coming sooner or later and they played a positive game and Mark Hardinges (who scored 80 not out) came off for them up front.
"Having said that we expected to win the game and I think we would have done had it gone its course."
Today's game could be Graeme Hick's final appearance at Taunton. The 42-year-old is yet to agree a new contract at New Road.
It is 20 seasons since he scored 405 not out against Somerset at Taunton.
Somerset's target is to win this game and their final fixture against Lancashire at Liverpool next month to avoid relegation and the need for an awkward play-off game in between their final two Championship fixtures.
The news that the ICC Champions Trophy has been postponed is a blow to Somerset's hopes of a maiden Championship title.
It means Durham will have Steve Harmison, Shivnarine Chanderpaul and Paul Collingwood available for most of the rest of the season. Similarly, Nottinghamshire will be able to call upon Stuart Broad, Samit Patel and Graeme Swann. Ryan Sidebottom has been ruled out for the rest of the campaign through injury.
Somerset face Notts and Durham, the second and third-placed sides in Division One, in their next two games. Durham 'dropped' five batting bonus points by being bowled out for 156 by Hampshire at Basingstoke yesterday.
