Bikers hit Weston for charity
More than 400 bikers from across the region took part in the third Fred’s Hospice Run on Sunday, soaking up the sun as they hit the road.
They cruised into Weston-super-Mare, raising thousands of pounds for Weston Hospicecare and beating last year’s total of 270 bikes.
The event was organised by Lyn Cox in memory of her brother Malcolm Baker – known as Fred – who died of cancer in 2006, aged 50.
The bikers left the Cox’s home in Sandford at about 1.15pm, and after a trip through Burrington Combe, the Mendips and Cheddar Gorge, arrived in Weston just over an hour later.
The motorbikes were then parked along the seafront.
Lyn, 58, a school bus driver, took part in the ride with her husband Roger, on the back of their Harley Davidson.
She said: “It was a great day, the support was fantastic. The weather was fantastic as well, which helped bring even more people out. We hope everybody had as much of a good time as Roger and I did.”
Malcolm spent his last days at Weston Hospicecare, so Lyn and her husband Roger decided to help raise money for the charity by organising the first run in 2007, and this year’s was the biggest yet.
The fundraising total is also set to be the biggest so far for Weston Hospicecare, which provides specialist palliative care for people and their families living with life- threatening illnesses. Fred’s Hospice Run has raised more than £8,000 for the charity from the two previous events.
Lyn added: “My brother was a keen biker in the late 1960s, riding his Triumph Bonneville, and is no doubt chuffed we are doing this run in his memory.
“We couldn’t have done it without the help and support of the Weston Motorcycle Action group who marshalled the event, Morses Motorcycles of Weston which supplied raffle prizes, and Scally’s of Weston.”
