A NEW store is to open in The Galleries shopping centre that could create 30 jobs.

As reported in The Post the new 99p store will be based on the third floor.

The shopping centre has undergone a major £3 million revamp to make way for the new arrival.

The bargain shop wanted a large space and the layout of the Galleries was changed to make room. The food court on the third floor was moved and new toilets installed.

The rapidly expanding 99p chain was launched just over ten years ago and now has more than 200 stores across the UK. The latest store is due to open on Monday, November 19, in time for the Christmas rush. The existing 99p Store in Knowle was one of the earliest branches in the UK.

There are 208 UK branches in the country, while 11 years ago there was just one.

"We are delighted to be announcing a 100 per cent increase in our presence in the city and a 0 per cent increase in our prices," Hussein Lalani, boss of the firm, said.

Typically around 5,000 different products are sold at each of the firm's stores – with 99p products extending from groceries to gardening, baby-wear to biscuits, food to drink, cosmetics to chilled food.

The value brand prides itself on selling just about everything from 99p fishing lines to pregnancy kits – garden gnomes to books.

Mr Lalani added: "We are thrilled to be doubling our presence in Bristol. The city is extremely close to our hearts as we opened up very early in our retail journey.

"We conduct constant research and feedback. The public in Bristol is telling us it has become 'cool' to shop at 99p Stores which we are delighted about too. This is a trend across all the UK. Telling people what you save on your weekly shop has become a national passion."

Colin Lang, centre manager at The Galleries, said: "Customers expect variety and value when they shop which is why this is a perfect addition to the range of stores here at The Galleries. The opening comes after the launch of the new food court and shoppers have told us how much the improvements have added to their enjoyment and as everyone loves a bargain, there's now even more reason than ever to spend time here."

“I hope the £3m refit also includes sacking the staff who shout over the tannoy to get you to leave at exactly 6pm and tell you the doors are being locked if you don;t get out.

Typical British customer service. do as little as possible and get off your shift ASAP.”

“£3 million pound spent just to accommodate a 99p store?? Plenty of vacant units all through broadmead and even in the galleries surely would of made more sense to use one of those??? Or am I just being a bit silly?”

“The Gallaries setting their targets high, then.

This sort of outlet would be more at home in a rank of shops on a run-down estate rather than being part of (as claimed on the Gallaries website) an "essential destination for your favourite stores".”

Anyone see the BBC1 programme last night, about the growing number of Poundshops and their rivalry? Mr Lalani and his 99p Shops was one of the two British stores featured, trying to compete with the American owned, much larger, Poundland. Very enlightening.”

“So "the shopping centre has undergone a major £3 million revamp" in order to accommodate a store employing 30 people selling goods for 99p made by someone in China being paid $1 a day.

Welcome to the new world economy!”
