A PATRIOTIC lion has been unveiled at a Clifton hotel.

Vincent, who stands on the terrace at the Avon Gorge Hotel, was given a red, white and blue makeover in time for the Olympic torch relay's passage across Clifton Suspension Bridge today.

The design, featuring references to fish and chips, postage stamps and other great British symbols was created by Zoe Kelland, 21, from Henleaze. She received £250 for her charity the Nakuru Children's Project for the winning design.

The 1.2m by 1.8m lion sculpture arrived at the hotel without any decoration and a competition was launched for charities, schools and organisations to come up with a design for him with a £250 prize.

The design theme was Best of British to help celebrate the Queen's Diamond Jubilee and the Olympics.

Ms Kelland co-founded the Nakura Children's Project with two friends in 2009 to help children affected by poverty in Kenya and improve their education.

The trio spent time working at the school in Nakura during their gap year. After Ms Kelland's design was chosen, artist Emma Bedlam decorated the lion sculpture.

Ms Kelland said: "I'm so excited to have won the competition and see my design in all its glory. The £250 prize money will go straight to providing free hot lunches to children in Kenya who otherwise eat only one or no meals each day."

Guillaume Lesage, hotel general manager, said: "We are absolutely thrilled with Vincent's new look – Zoe has done a fantastic job."
