Best of British burst into life
FOR this concert in its Best of British season the orchestra, under conductor Tim Gauterin, chose a cello concerto considered to be one of the composer's finest works; a composer's favourite among the nine symphonies he wrote; and a much neglected symphonic poem.
Charismatic guest cello soloist Leonard Elschenbroich is a BBC New Generation Artist.
The passion within his performance – and sheer delight he obviously has in playing – were matched by the quality of his interpretation, making this presentation of Elgar's fine Cello Concerto one to savour from the beginning to the end.
Having kept the orchestra on the tightest of reins during the Cello Concerto conductor Tim Gauterin allowed them far more freedom of expression for Vaughan Williams A London Symphony. This is a work where the listener can allow their imaginations to run riot.

The old Covent Garden flower market awakening into a burst of colour and sound, the docks, Regal buildings and the grimmer underbelly of the city, were all there.
Now over 100 years old Frank Bridge's Symphonic poem Isabella still provokes arguments about its merits, arguments that would have been reignited by the orchestra's highly committed interpretation.
