People are invited to take a nostalgic trip back to the 1920s and 1930s at a glamorous event this weekend.

Music, dance, cabaret and vintage-inspired fashion will feature at the Spirit Of The Age Jazz Age garden party on the lawns of Westonbirt House, Tetbury, South Gloucestershire.

Guests, who are encouraged to dress in period costume, will be able to enjoy a display of pre-war cars on the lawn, featuring a huge gathering of Derby Bentleys, as well as period music and entertainment throughout the day and guided tours of the Grade-I listed Westonbirt House.

Those who attend can also take part in walks around the landscaped grounds and ornamental Italian walled garden, enjoy champagne and cocktails and dance lessons in the orangery.

A vintage clothing and Art Deco bazaar will also be in place at the event.

At night, there will be concerts featuring the Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain and the Blue Harlem, while for classic and vintage car buffs, there will be a Bentley marquee with restoration services, components for vintage Bentleys and Bentley staff demonstrating the traditional skills required for restoring upholstery and woodwork.

The event is sponsored by Bentley Motors and will feature the biggest collection of pre-war Derby Bentleys in the UK celebrating the 75th anniversary of the car.

Founder of the Spirit of the Age event, entrepreneur Laurence Trackman, said: "The focus of the event is just as much about music and fashion, as it is about cars. There was such a verve, energy and mould-breaking inventiveness during the period which we are trying to recapture with this event. We encourage all guests to dress to the nines for a very individual day out."

Mr Trackman, a vintage car enthusiast, said: "Although it was the time of the Great Depression, and a world war was looming, people knew how to party and did things so beautifully.

"There was glamour, style, quality, luxury and fun in those days. You can make a comparison to today, when things aren't going quite so well at present. Rather than retreating into our shells, perhaps we should learn to enjoy ourselves a bit more. If the economy's slowing down, perhaps there's time to relax and have a bit more fun."

Mr Trackman, who lives in Clifton with his wife Jude, began organising his Thirties-themed parties four years ago when he decided to hold a gathering for friends who were also vintage car owners and enthusiasts.

"I try never to do things by halves, so I hired Dyrham Park, the National Trust house and grounds in Wiltshire, for the day and invited paying guests," he said.

"People can pay £25 for a ticket in advance and come along with a picnic but they must dress in Jazz Age costume, otherwise they won't get in.
