Battling Hereford denied a draw by late strike
Full-time: Millwall 1 Hereford United 0
Brave Hereford were undone by Lewis Grabban's goal four minutes from time.
The Bulls scrapped away well and looked to have done enough to earn a point in a game which saw both sides reduced to 10 men in the second period.
Graham Turner opted to shake up his squad for Hereford's first visit to Millwall in 31 years.
The United chief made four changes, pairing Nick Chadwick and Bradley Hudson-Odoi in attack in place of Steve Guinan and Andy Williams, while experienced midfielder Ben Smith returned and Kris Taylor moved to left-back due to an injury to Richard Jackson.
Sam Gwynne was also omitted, with former Leeds man Simon Johnson taking his place on the right of midfield.
Stephen O'Leary and Matt Done were recalled to the substitutes' bench.
As the sides jockeyed for position in the opening exchanges, there was an early yellow card for Hereford's Richard Rose for a foul on Neil Harris.
United's Darren Randolph was the first of the two goalkeepers to be called into action, but he was not unduly stretched in fielding a low shot from Tresor Kandol. A low cross from Grabban then forced a hurried clearance from the visitors' defence.
Hereford's first real attack saw Johnson deliver a firm cross that Hudson-Odoi was unable to get on the end of.
Millwall were still having the better of play and Kandol should have opened the scoring when he headed a Grabban cross a long way wide before Grabban himself was even further off-target with a 20-yard volley.
Hereford, who had been neat in the their approach work, forced the first corner of the game on 37 minutes, but Johnson's flag-kick came to nothing.
Then, as half-time approached, Chadwick's volley from a Hudson-Odoi cross lacked the pace to trouble home keeper David Forde.
Hereford's chances received a boost three minutes into the second half when the home side were reduced to 10 men.
Midfielder Nadjim Abdou was sent off for going into a challenge with Clint Easton with studs showing.
However, parity was restored in the 61st minute, when Chadwick was shown his second yellow card of the evening.
Hereford enjoyed a chance when Hudson-Adoi forced a parry from Forde with a stinging volley, but it was the home attack which was most frequently in action.
Their accuracy left much to be desired, however, although Grabban forced an acrobatic tip-over from Randolph with a powerful long-range drive.
Andy Frampton's flying header then flashed inches over the bar, before four minutes from time, the goal came as Grabban's surging run ended with a powerful drive which Randolph beat out but only to the feet of the midfielder who scored from 10 yards.
