Bath's home Guinness Premiership clash with Wasps is yet to be rescheduled – but head coach Steve Meehan remains keen for the match to be played on January 31, despite opposition from some quarters.

The game was postponed little more than an hour before kick-off on Saturday due to some areas of the Recreation Ground pitch being deemed frozen.

Bath, despite having a strength and conditioning camp in Seville booked for the week leading up to January 31, are eager to face Wasps on that date rather than later in the season.

And with re-arranged matches between Gloucester and London Irish, Harlequins and Northampton and Worcester and Sale already scheduled for January 31, Meehan sees no reason why his team should not face Wasps that day.

"There is certainly some resistance to playing that game on January 31, for whatever reason," said Meehan.

"But I don't understand – if there is a free weekend, why would you not play it on January 31? The other option seems to be to play midweek in April.

"But April is the eighth month of the competition and by then you are getting toward semi-final time and all the rest of it. You are getting closer to a time when the players are at their maximum workloads – so that doesn't make sense to me."

The England Saxons' clash with Portugal on Friday, January 30 would appear to provide one of the stumbling blocks to a January 31 Bath-Wasps date – but Meehan says a precedent has already been set by re-arranging three other Premiership games for that weekend.

"I haven't spoken to Wasps about it and it is a Premier Rugby matter," said Meehan.

"True, the Saxons are playing against Portugal on January 30 but I believe they are using a relatively young side for that match.

"And at the same time, two Premiership matches are going ahead that weekend because of the EDF semi-finals and the weather conditions which wouldn't allow Sale and Worcester to play a few weeks ago.

"We've got a precedent there – we've already got six of the 12 Premiership teams playing, so why should it not be eight?"

Bath travel to Newport Gwent Dragons in the Heineken Cup on Sunday – and it emerged yesterday that former Bath scrum-half Andy Williams has left the club after an injury-ravaged start to the season. He has already been linked with a move to the Scarlets.
