Bath's Robinson hoping to be an FA Cup giant-killer again
One Bath City player knows what it takes to go to a League Two ground and claim a FA Cup scalp – and Ryan Robinson is hoping to experience that again this weekend.
The keeper, who has made a hugely impressive start to his City career after injury delayed his debut until last week, was part of the Forest Green Rovers side which stunned Rotherham United two years ago.
Rovers let a two-goal lead slip at The New Lawn but stormed to a stunning 3-0 victory in the replay at Millmoor to set up a second-round tie at Swindon, which the hosts scraped 3-2 thanks to an 88th-minute winner.
Robinson is relishing the chance to face league opposition again this weekend and says there is no reason City cannot upset the odds against Grimsby Town.
"It would be amazing to get through this game to the next round," said Robinson, who started his career with Blackburn Rovers.
"When Rovers beat Rotherham there was only one league between the teams, so this is slightly different, but I think we are as good as a lot of teams in the Conference Premier.
"We'd like to think this is a good time to be facing Grimsby. They are not having the best of times and we are playing well.
"It is just 11 against 11 and all we can do is go there and make sure we give a good account of ourselves."
Recalling the Rotherham matches, Robinson said: "When we played them at home, we dominated the game and were 2-0 up but then we realised how close we were to a win, got edgy and conceded late on. But we played brilliantly at Rotherham and really deserved to win. It was a great night."
Robinson admits the Grimsby game is 'a bonus' following a frustrating first five months at Twerton Park.
The 26-year-old had only just joined from Forest Green when he was diagnosed with a back injury which needed surgery and left him sidelined at the start of the season.
But he returned for the fourth qualifying round tie against AFC Totton, making a fantastic one-on-one save early on, and then kept clean sheets in the subsequent league matches against Weymouth and Bromley.
"I'm looking forward to Grimsby but my first game back was probably bigger for me," Robinson admitted.
"I hadn't played for a while and I just wanted to show everyone what I am about. That one-on-one save was my first touch and that was a real boost.
"The club have looked after me really well, especially the manager (Adie Britton). He could not have handled things any better – he didn't rush me back but kept ringing me to ask how I was.
"There is a great set of lads here as well. I've been at clubs in the past where the atmosphere has not been so good but these lads are right up there with the best."
