Bath coach Meehan angry with officials after derby defeat
Steve Meehan was left seething after his Bath side's 36-27 Guinness Premiership defeat at Gloucester – and will seek answers about key decisions made by the officials, writes Steve Cotton.
Referee Wayne Barnes sent off Bath captain Alex Crockett for two yellow cards, the first of which – for offside when his team were on a second warning – appeared to be a case of mistaken identity.
Crockett was about 20 metres away from play when Bath infringed, but still saw yellow.
And his first-half sin-binning proved costly when, 27 minutes into the second period, he tackled Gloucester winger Charlie Sharples without the ball and received a second yellow.
"With the first yellow card, I don't know how they got that ruling about Alex being offside," said Meehan.
"I know the team was on two warnings, but whether there was a mistaken identity or whatever, it's quite clear on the video that there are other players further up the field than Crockett.
"How did we come up with that one? The call came from the assistant referee – and that was a big call."
Meehan was deep in conversation with Tony Spreadbury, the Rugby Football Union's Elite Referee Development Officer, after the match – and made no secret about his disappointment.
He felt Matt Banahan was impeded by Iain Balshaw shortly before Gloucester's fourth try, while Crockett was shown a second yellow for what Meehan felt had been a similar offence.
"I saw two incidents that were very similar," he said.
"Gloucester were awarded with a try on one occasion and we were awarded with a yellow card on the other. That's something I think everyone will be talking about at the beginning of the week.
"We were frustrated by some of the decisions that were going against us – or some of the decisions that weren't being made at all – but that's all part of the Guinness Premiership.
"It's an intense environment and you're never going to be 100 per cent satisfied with what happens over the course of 80 minutes."
Bath lost scrum-half Michael Claassens with a head injury after a collision at a first-minute ruck and he will be assessed by the club's medics ahead of Saturday's home derby with Bristol.

“Steve Meehan had to find some excuse after the game and his comparison with a possible impeding of Banahan was his focus. The truth is, that there was so much 'off the ball' momentum from both sides and dare I say it mostly from Bath at the breakdown, where the blocking moves were particularly evident, that he can't really complain. It was a great game with both teams giving 100% and on this occasion Gloucester had the edge.”
