Steve Meehan was furious with his Bath side's "lazy" and "thoughtless" defensive display – despite their 35-31 bonus-point win over Glasgow in the Heineken Cup.

Bath edged yesterday's Pool Five clash at the Recreation Ground but were outscored by five tries to four in a thriller.

The victory kept the heat on pool leaders Toulouse – but head coach Meehan knows his side must defend better if they are to take anything from this weekend's trip to Scotland.

Two tries from Michael Stephenson and one apiece from Andy Beattie and Shaun Berne – as well as 15 points from the boot of Butch James – gave Bath the five pool points. But Meehan was far from happy with the way his side, who had not shipped more than 28 points in a match all season before the game, were so vulnerable.

"We're very disappointed with our defensive application," said Meehan.

"Defence is a reflection of motivation and attitude, so we obviously need to do some work on that.

"We know we can defend – we've done it very well over the last few weeks – but it's a question of application. It's a question of mentally being there.

"You've certainly got to respect your opposition. You can't just say, 'it's Glasgow and therefore we win'.

"For us to get a result up there next week, we are going to have to make sure our attitude is spot-on and we don't give them the opportunities we did here.

"Holes opened up because guys were lazy. They either weren't getting their heads up to see where the Glasgow attack was – or, if they were and guys were screaming at them to get into position, they weren't reacting to it. Maybe there was a bit of thoughtlessness out there."

Bath's five-point haul kept them three points behind Toulouse, who visit the Rec on the final weekend of pool action in January.

Meehan said: "We need to put pressure on them – because when French teams are under pressure, all sorts of things can happen."
