Thurrock 2 Bath City 0

Bath's South African goalkeeper Paul Evans ended his football career in strange circumstances at Thurrock's Ship Lane Ground on Saturday.

Evans had been at fault for Thurrock's first goal, then made two fine saves before being dismissed in the final minute of the game.

Bath's faint hopes of making the play-offs had been dashed by Hampton and Richmond's ground receiving a favourable grading, but there was still much to play for as Thurrock were battling to avoid the drop from the Blue Square South - a fate they did not manage to achieve as Dorchester also won.

City were without striker Stuart Douglas, whose car broke down en route to the game, and were forced to play with Dave Gilroy as their lone striker.

The Romans had the best of the first half, but then struggled in the second after Thurrock scored twice in ten minutes.

Their first goal came when a swirling high ball was dropped by Evans, allowing substitute Che Stadhart to score.

The hosts went further ahead when a fine move down the right resulted in a Harlee Dean cross for Tehkounte Malik to fire home.

The final twist came with only seconds to go as Malik ran clear and was brought down by Evans, although there seemed to be minimal contact.

Referee Wes Linden awarded a free-kick and sent off Evans.
