CUTE babies and cheeky toddlers shone in front of the cameras as the Post's Baby of the Year competition got under way.

Proud parents brought their playful toddlers down to the Galleries shopping centre where the Post has its stall set up for the next three weeks.

The kids wriggled and squirmed until the perfect photo was taken by the competition's professional photographers. But parents will all be facing stiff competition as this year's cash prizes are bigger than ever.

The family of the winner of this year's competition will take home a prize of £1,500 and the winners of the three other categories £500 each.

Dave and Sarah Ticktum, from Kingswood, arrived yesterday to get their nine-month-old Samuel snapped.

Mr Ticktum said: "We never thought about entering it, but every one keeps coming up and saying how cute Samuel is. It keeps on happening so we thought we would give it a go and bring him down here."

Chantelle Thomson, 20, from Bedminster, brought her baby Tyrell down to the stand.

As she struggled to keep her nine-month-old pride and joy still for the snap she told the Post: "He's such a smiley little baby he usually gets loads of attention out on the street from strangers walking by."

She added: "If we win I'm going to spend all the money on his birthday and Christmas presents and then do out his room for him."

The Post will have a stand in the shopping centre between 10am and 4.30pm from Monday to Saturday and on Sundays between 11am and 4pm.

A special supplement will be published on Tuesday, October 23, featuring pictures of all the babies in the running for the prize. Readers will then have until Tuesday, November 8, to vote for their favourite tot or baby.

As well as an overall winner there will also be three winners in three different age groups which are up to nine months, ten to 18 months and finally 19 to 36 months.
