LSDs win Division One softball title
1st Division
Guppy Spotters 3 LSDs 6
The deciding game of the first division took place on a cold, damp and dark evening.
The game itself was a close, tense affair in which neither team was able to gain superiority over the other. Both teams were unable to make much impact with the bats with LSDs winning the first innings one run to nil and the Guppys pulling them back by winning the second innings 1-0.
The same pattern emerged in the third and fourth innings with Guppys gaining a two run advantage in the third to be pulled back by LSDs in the fourth.
The fifth and sixth innings were scoreless so the seventh innings started with the scores locked at three runs each. An early score in the innings saw LSDs gain the advantage then Sarah Gillies drove a ground ball up the middle to safely make first base.
Piers Bentley hit a line drive into right field and aggressive running by the LSDs saw Sarah Gillies make three but saw Bentley tagged just short of second.
Guppys completed another out then Rich Hawkins came up to bat, hit safely into right field to score Gillies and a rare fielding error allowed Hawkins to run the bases and bring in a home run.
Guppys completed their outs and came up needing four runs to take the game. LSDs held their nerve, got their three outs and stopped Guppys from scoring to become division one champions for this year.
The Forks 0 Tbolts 7
Due to a shortage of players this game did not take place and resulted in a forfeit to TBolts.
Bristol Creamers 16 Tbolts 5
This was a must win game for Bristol Creamers if they wanted to have a chance of avoiding relegation and was another close affair for the majority of the game.
Simon Tovey, playing in the outfield for Tbolts almost single handedly restricted Creamers from scoring by covering an amazing amount of ground to take some excellent catches and restrict Creamers to one base hits where they may have looked for more.
Creamrs for their part in the field also worked hard to keep Tbolts from advancing the bases and were good at taking the chances for outs when they came along.
The game entered the fifth innings with Creamers holding a one-run advantage over Tbolts.
A difficult night for pitchers saw Creamers gain an advantage in this innings and eight runs came in. Tbolts pulled one back at the top of the sixth but Creamers continued to score when it was their turn to bat.
The umpire and players agreed that due to the failing light the game should be terminated part way through this innings.
The final relegation spot still needs to be decided between these two teams but due to anomalies clarification from the committee is required.
3rd Division
Thunderbats 10 Spartans 19
Newcomers Thunderbats performed well against Spartans but were never able to curtail the Spartans batting ability and Spartans were in control throughout this encounter.
Multiple Scorgasms 21 Go Balls Deep 1
The weather was fine for the last game of the season for Multiple Scorgasms against Go Balls Deep and the Scorgs needed this win to secure their place at the top of division 3.
Go Balls Deep couldn't quite do it with their sticks in the first two innings, and The Scorgs got a few runs in.
Ultimately the score was irrelevant, as both teams enjoyed a great game full of fun and humour. Once ball game was called both teams continued to play for the sheer fun and coaching on offer.
Instead of a single team huddle, both teams joined arms for the final call and a dance or two. Big thanks to Johnny Lucas who had a fantastic pitching debut for The Scorgs and to Ali Nash making his Scorgs debut and awarded male MVP and finally to Go Balls Deep for their great sportsmanship and enthusiasm.
Best of luck to both teams next season.
Male MVP Ali Nash M . S. Female MVP Maggie G . B . D.
Flatpackers 13 Greasy Mitts 18
These two teams have been nip and tuck with each other all season in the battle for third place with Flatpackers holding the advantage over Mitts in the last few weeks. The result of this game elevated Greasy Mitts to the same number of points as Flatpackers but Flatpackers retained third place due to have the better record in the head to head encounters.
