BSA League results - July 21, 22, 23
FIRST DIVISION
Guppy Spotters 11 Grandslammers 8
Excellent batting from Grandslammers saw them come close to a win against a solid Guppy defence.
All runs were hard earned and mistakes were quickly punished. Grandslammers own defence yielded few errors and restricted Guppys to 11 runs with a bat in hand as the game ended after top of 7.
Grandslammers pitcher Mel took the female Most Valued Player award for her explosive batting and steady pitching while Guppy's stand-in shortstop Adrian Dent combined an error free batting performance with tight defence.
Next week sees what should be the game of the season as the joint league leaders meet.
Tbolts 10 Bucks Whiz 11
In the continuing battle at the bottom of the division Bucks Whiz gave themselves a lifeline to avoid relegation by defeating fellow strugglers Tbolts by the narrowest of margins and record their second win of the season.
Real Flyers 9 Bristol Creamers 8
Another very tight game that was also decided by one run. Both teams struggled to score early on and the one run scored by Real Flyers in the first innings was the only score separating the teams going into the fourth innings.
Creamers pushed in four runs in this innings mainly due to a fine home run from captain Nick Peberdy but the lead was short lived as Flyers scored three runs of their own in this innings to bring about a tied game.
The fielding remained tight with few runs being scored and Creamers went out to field in the seventh innings with a three-run lead to defend. Creamers had opportunities to get Flyers out but the ball just wouldn't go in their gloves. And when Jeremy Gordon-Smith reduced the lead to two runs with a fine right-field home run the pendulum seemed to be swinging back to the Flyers.
And so it proved when they pushed in the two runs required to give them the win.
LSDs 12 Forks 11
LSDs maintained the pressure at the top of the league in a thrilling game that went to extra innings.
LSDs shut the Forks out in the first two innings and batted well including a home run by captain Michael Robinsin-Moltke to get an early lead and a double to left field by Polly Hussey.
However the Forks put on a solid display of fielding to shut the LSDs out in the fourth and fifth innings. With crucial home runs by Mark Fenton and Sean Garton in the seventh innings the score was leveled at 10-10.
Forks went ahead when Alex Golton crossed home plate but Forks couldn't increase their lead.
LSDs, with their position joint-top of the table at risk, put on an impressive display of intelligent hitting to score the required two runs to seal the victory. Softball at it's best.
MVPs : Michael Robinson-Moltke (LSDs); Saghi Zarbafi (Forks).
SECOND DIVISION
Chipmonks 19 The Force 11
Chipmonks maintained their 3rd place standing in the division by completing the double over The Force who have shown good form recently.
Veteran pitcher Jim Kelly for Chipmonks showed his class again and was awarded the male MVP for the match.
Imperial Sliders 18 Friendly Fire 2
Friendly Fire found it extremely difficult to score runs against the division's leading team Imperial Sliders who completed another clinical display to establish themselves at the top of the league again.
Flintstones 21 Sloggers 22
Flintstones have been displaying improved form recently and have been unlucky to be on the end of a couple of one or two run defeats in the last few weeks.
And this trend continued when they lost to the experienced Sloggers team by one run in a high-scoring encounter.
Desperadoes 11 Orange Crushers 18
Orange continued their winning ways with a solid batting and fielding performance. They also continued their run of gaining revenge for defeats in the first half of the season with this win against Desperadoes who were joint top of the division before the game.
Orange started well with three runs in the first innings and then in the second batted through the order to score seven runs and put themselves in a strong position.
Excellent Orange defence kept desperadoes to only three runs in the first three innings and Desperadoes struggled to get back into the game.
The final score (18-11) reflected an excellent and friendly but hard fought game.
MVPs in the match went to Alan Mills from Orange for his batting and pitching and to Coral Abbey also of Orange for her strong batting and good fielding.
THIRD DIVISION
Flatpackers 4 Multiple Scorgasms 30
Multiple Scorgasms scored freely throughout this encounter against a Flatpackers team who struggled throughout the game to perform with the bat.
Greasy Mitts 25 Thunderbats 6
A strong batting performance from the Greasy Mitts combined with solid defence that stopped the Thunderbats scoring resulted in a solid victory for the home side.
Spartans 19 Go Balls Deep 4
Top of the division Spartans continued their winning ways against Go Balls Deep who restricted Spartans from scoring heavily in each innings but could not pierce the Spartans defence when it was their turn with the bat.
