Bolton Wanderers have joined the race for the signature of Bristol City star Albert Adomah.

The 25-year-old winger is already wanted by Championship promotion contenders Crystal Palace, who have had two bids turned down since last Thursday.

  1. Albert Adomah: Bristol City's star player is now attracting interest from Bolton.

Eagles boss Ian Holloway wants Adomah as a long-term replacement for Manchester United-bound Wilfried Zaha and the south London club are set to come in with an improved offer ahead of Thursday's transfer deadline.

But The Post has learned that Palace will now face competition from Championship rivals Bolton.

Trotters boss Dougie Freeedman is keen to bolster his side's attacking options and is ready to make a move for Ghana international Adomah in the next 48 hours.

There has already been contact between Bolton representatives and Adomah's agent, Tony Finningan, who is keeping the player informed of events while he represents Ghana at the African Cup of Nations in South Africa.

Although the Lancashire club has yet to make a formal bid, Bristol City directors will be hoping their interest sparks a bidding war in the run-up to Thursday's 11pm deadline.

Palace have had offers of £1m and £1.5m turned down and have been told to improve their offer if they want to sign Adomah during this window.

City have sensibly refused  to put  a price on the winger's head, but The Post understands any offer that guarantees a down-payment of £2m will test their resolve.

Palace have cash to spend after receiving £10m up front for the sale of Zaha to Premier League leaders Manchester United and City chairman Keith Dawe and football managing director Jon Lansdown are prepared to play hard ball as they seek the best possible price for their major asset.

Bolton's interest is sure ramp up the pressure on Palace and hasten a third offer, while the Trotters will know they have to better anything the London club has offered so far even to bring City to the negotiating table.

Striker Craig Davies remains the only permanent signing to arrive at The Reebok Stadium this month and Freedman has made public his desire to recruit another two players before the deadline.

One of those is Hamilton Academicals utility player Gary Fraser and the other could now be Adomah, who has 18 months to run on his Ashton Gate contract.

“They'll get £2m max. If they try for more and he doesn't move, he'll go for free once his contract is up. It'll be Aaron Brown all over again.”

“if palace sign george boyd - which looks likely - thats both flanks for them covered, and they may feel less pressure to up their bid for adomah. over to bolton?”

    “@ Vonner:

Bolasie's agent has already linked him with Wigan & Fulham @ £2m so AA's certainly worth £5m on that basis.”

“I'm hopeful that the situation with Albert is nothing like that of Bolasie. I believe Albert appreciates he got his first break here and feels the genuine warmth the fans have for him. Unlike Bolasie who is young, naive and probably wondering when he can get his first Bentley - if he IS the real deal lets see how long Palace keep hold of him till his agent whispers in his ear again.

As said before the ideal shout is a buy and loan back deal. That way Albert can get the sort of send off he deserves whatever happens to us. Sadly it will be economics that dictate this - the player may have little input...”

“A Sheff Utd striker (League One)turned down a move to Palace yesterday after a £1.2m fee was agreed.

Not everyone wants to play in London it appears.”

    “@FromMendip:

I agree there is no loyalty in football. So tell AA's agent and other clubs that he's seeing out his contract until someone comes up with enough money. Now, we may need to moderate our approach if he get's closer to the end of his contract but we'll have the player until then and AA won't get disgruntled as long as he's playing.

I'm afraid contract cut both ways and players have to realise that.”

Up goes the fee towards the magic £5m.”

“Oh dear NiceCityBoy - looks like you might have to pay a proper price for him now...

You had one freebie with Bolasie - we had no choice once his head had been turned by that 'unbiased agent'. Use some of the inflated Zaha money...”

“I hope we can play the game and max out the fee we can secure for AA, good luck to him; he has a lot to his game but has limits. I would sell.

Take into account that BCFC have no ambition at all, I think it's more than fair to say that Lansdown & Lansdown are positioning the "business model" at a lower "cost base point" Div 1.

They are happy and hopeful for relegation and cashing out assets like AA. That's the reality of it.”

“What some fans don't seem to want to accept is that if a player wants a move there is little to be gained by holding on to him.

His motivation will suffer; he may harbour a sense of grievance; his performances may well worsen.

There is no loyalty in football - whether player to club or club to player.

If Albert really does see his future away from Ashton Gate (or perhaps more accurately his agent does) then the club must face reality and get the best price for him that they can in the circumstances.

I don't say that any of this is ideal but it's the way of the football world that everyone involved with the game, including the fans, is part of.”
