BDO searching for pub players
Amateur darts players from Bristol are being offered the chance to play in front of TV cameras during the World Championships at the prestigious Lakeside venue next January.
BDO World Championship's sponsor John Smith's will begin their search for the best pub and club players from around Britain next month as part of the groundbreaking amateur tournament, which is in its second year.
The winners from each region will get the opportunity to play each other during the eight-day World Championships at the Lakeside at the start of next year – where the two finalists will battle it out in front of a TV audience of millions on January 11.
A qualifying round for pub and club players in the South West is to be held at the Staddy Club in Plymouth on November 21.
The lucky winner will get the chance to be mentored by one of the eight professionals – including Tony 'Silverback' O'Shea and Darryl 'The Dazzler' Fitton – backing the competition.
Last year's People's Championship attracted an entry of more than 10,000 players from over 800 pubs and clubs and was eventually won by Welshman Tim 'Teapot' Jones, who was awarded entry into three of this season's BDO tournaments as a result.
Players will compete in knock-outs at John Smith's pubs and clubs during September and October 2009. See www.johnsmiths.co.uk for more details.
