GOALS from skipper Corinne Yorston and Annie Heatherson put Bristol Academy into the last eight of the Women's FA Cup as they opened their new season with victory on a mudbath pitch at the Keepmoat Stadium.

Belles boss John Buckley had sung the praises of the Vixens' captain before the game, and it was Yorston, pictured, who supplied the cross which saw Bristol go close to establishing a 14th-minute lead.

Although Heatherson headed it wide, Yorston then broke the deadlock when she struck with a left-foot curler from the edge of the box which sailed beyond keeper Nicola Hobbs and into the top corner.

Laura Del Rio rattled Doncaster's bar from a free-kick before racing through the defence, only to shoot wide as the Vixens continued to create the better openings.

Just before the interval, Heatherson went close again as her header from a Yorston corner flew just over.

The Belles tried to rally and Jess Sigsworth saw her attempt drift wide of Siobhan Chamberlain's post early in the second period. But the visitors increased their lead when Hobbs spilled a shot and Heatherson was on hand to fire home the loose ball.

The home side fought to try to get back into the game over the closing stages, but were unable to seriously threaten a Bristol side who will be looking for another good run in the competition after reaching the final and semi-finals in the last two seasons.

They have their first home game of the campaign next Saturday when they take on Lincoln in the Continental Cup (6pm).

Bristol Academy: Chamberlain, Dykes, Yorston, Matthews, Rose, Windell, Heatherson (James 77) , Del Rio, Watts, Staniforth (McCatty 83), Curson (Harding 64).
