Bristol’s Family Information Service, which is run by Bristol City Council to provide statutory advice to parents and carers of children has been recognised with a national award.

The organisation, which provides parents and carers with wide-ranging advice on anything from affordable childcare to benefits information, has been given the Families First Award by the Day Care Trust.

The Easton-based service handled 23,467 enquiries last year through their helpline and online Family Service Directory.

Alastair Watson, Bristol City Council’s cabinet member for children and young people said: “Bristol's Family Information Service sole aim is to help parents and carers as they tussle with important decisions such as who should look after their child and overcome barriers to starting or staying in work or training by providing advice on affordable childcare.

“The service works hard to make this support accessible by running information sessions at Children's Centres and other venues around the city so it's fitting that the quality of their work has been recognised by the Families First Award.”
