Avonmouth respond with win
AVONMOUTH bounced back from their opening defeat of the season last weekend with a 48-8 victory at St Mary's Old Boys on Saturday.
They remain in second place in South West Two West but host leaders Taunton on Saturday.
Saints scrum-half Steve Plummer kicked a penalty but Avonmouth dominated the first half with tries from Greg Long, Charlie Reynolds (2) and Liam Poole. Reynolds kicked a conversion and a penalty to hand the visitors a 25-3 half-time lead.
Saints hit back with a try from their player-coach and former Scotland and Bristol prop Dave Hilton, but Avonmouth's Grant Britton and Andy Taylor touched down before Reynolds landed a late penalty after Mary's had No 8 James Foss had been sin-binned for stamping.
Yatton beat bottom side Clevedon 32-15 to move out of the bottom three.
Tony Hill crossed twice, John Shorney adding a conversion, to put the hosts 12-0 ahead after 11 minutes.
But Clevedon were ahead just before the break thanks to tries Ashley Vailes and Dave Rawle and a penalty and a conversion from Simon Johns.
Already suffering with influential players out injured, Clevedon lost two more when Vailes and Joe Kaniecki clashed heads when trying to stop Shorney's try.
Play was held up for 10 minutes as Vailes, who suffered a fractured cheekbone, and Kaniecki received treatment.
Shorney kicked a conversion and two penalties before wing Chris Edwards' late try sealed the points.
In South West One, strugglers Cleve claimed their second victory of the season, a 16-13 success at Barnstaple.
Prop Dave Vivian and Bath Academy No 8 Josh Ovens, on his debut, were Cleve's try-scorers, Matt Spencer adding two penalties.
Weston-super-Mare survived a late rally from visitors Chippenham to win 27-23. The Seasiders started well and went 14-3 ahead, centre George Britton setting up wing Paul Sprague for the first try before crossing the whitewash himself. James Mackay converted both scores.
The visitors reduced Weston's lead to three points with two Karl Brant penalties and a Darren McMillan try, but Mackay kicked two penalties and converted Mark Armstrong's try to make it 27-11.
Chippenham fought back well but tries from John Turner and McMillan, plus another Brant conversion, were not enough.
