Hidden away just minutes from the hustle and bustle of city life is Troopers Hill nature reserve in east Bristol.

This unique heathland, sandwiched between St George and the edge of the River Avon, is an important sanctuary for some of our best loved native birds and some more exotic visitors.

Bird expert Ed Drewitt unravels the cacophony of bird songs as he leads a 'Dawn Chorus' walk round the reserve.

Friends of Troopers Hill organise many free events throughout the year suitable for the whole family. The next walk 'Tree Gazing' is led by tree expert Tony Titchen on Sunday May 20 at 10.30am.

“Glad everyone enjoyed it - was a lovely morning and despite low cloud, we heard lots of spring birds singing and saw migrants such as meadow pipits flying overhead on their way north! Seeing the green woodpecker close by was a bonus too.
For more dawn choruses coming up, check my website eddrewitt.com - there's two this weekend (one in Kingswood and another in Leigh Woods).”

“It was a really interesting walk. I have now remembered one more bird call - the alarm call of the blackcap. Ed always has fascinating information to relay in a fascinating and absorbing way. Well worth getting up at 4.30am to be there for 6am. Very glad I had all my winter gear on. It was cold.”
