Attacking mentality pays off for unbeaten Bristol Rovers

Bristol Rovers Fan's View: By Dennis Payter

At last we have got our 2009 campaign under way – and we are unbeaten this year!

OK, we were playing a struggling side but it is always good to secure an away win and how often have we come unstuck against sides at the foot of the table?

Saturday's victory at Leyton Orient was all the more important because it opened up a bit of a gap on the sides below us and closed the space on the bunch in the middle of the table.

Now we must kick on from this and move swiftly up the league with seven of our next 11 matches coming at the Memorial Stadium.

Yet again, as so often this season, we didn't really start playing at Orient until we were a goal behind and I couldn't believe that once again we conceded from a corner.

We had three weeks to sort things out since the poor goal we gave away against MK Dons but it was worrying to see we that still seem to have problems picking up players in these situations.

The main thing was that our heads didn't drop, the side hit back in a very positive manner and we got the bit of luck we needed when Ricky Lambert's shot was deflected nicely for Jeff Hughes to slot home.

I was pleased that Paul Trollope took off a midfield player in Chris Lines and replaced him with Darryl Duffy to play with three forwards away from home.

Duffy (pictured) rewarded his boss with a fine winning goal, his first since we lost at Leeds in August.

Let's hope this goal turns his season around because things have not gone well for Duffy since he arrived from Swansea and, as forwards generally come on as substitutes when the side is not doing well, the striker has frequently been the butt of the fans' frustrations at The Mem.

It was good to see other players getting on the scoresheet as Lambert is going through a bit of a drought by his standards.

We don't really want him getting another four goals in a game until the transfer window closes, although talk of £100 million for Kaka could push the value of all players, including Lambert, up a few bob!

Talking of millionaires, I really enjoyed our FA Youth Cup-tie against Liverpool. It was a great credit to our Centre of Excellence. Our boys gave as good as they got and were out on their feet at the end of a cracking game.

Liverpool showed how seriously they were taking the game by flying their youngsters down to Bristol – and the match was shown live on the Red's own TV Channel.

Let's hope it won't be long before some of our lads are live on TV again playing in the first team.

“I expect we will go on a small run of not losing for 2 or 3 games, and then go on another poor run and end up finishing this season around 18th. Glad Duffy has another goal to him name. I genuinely hope he gets another chance and takes it!”
