Attacker forced victim to mop up his own blood
A Bristol man beat up his friend for an hour – then ordered him to clean up his blood with a mop and bucket.
Michael Barnes and Tyrone Maximen lured Matthew Grealish to Maximen's flat before they "assaulted and humiliated" him.
Barnes, 29, of Whitehall, was jailed for nine months at Bristol Crown Court yesterday.
He pleaded guilty to assault and theft following the attack, on June 9 last year, and Maximen, 28, of St Paul's, pleaded guilty to assault.
Maximen was given a six month sentence, suspended for 18 months, ordered to do 100 hours community service, pay £500 compensation and £200 costs.
"Mr Grealish grew up in Bristol and knew Maximen, and was one of Barnes's closest friends," said Charles Row, prosecuting.
Maximen phoned Mr Grealish asking for help fixing a bicycle in his St Paul's flat.
Mr Grealish walked into the living room and saw Barnes, who put on a pair of black cycle gloves.
Barnes pushed him back on to the sofa and beat him up for what seemed like an hour to Mr Grealish.
Maximen and Barnes accused their friend of making abusive phone calls to another friend's mother.
Mr Grealish had no idea what they were taking about, but he admitted it to make them stop.
"He was given a bucket and a mop, and made to clean up his own blood," said Mr Row.
Barnes took Mr Grealish's mobile after the assault.
Mr Grealish suffered bruising, lacerations to his face, swollen black eyes, a sore chest and ribs.
Robert Duval, defending Maximen, said: "Maximen did not hit this man at all, he was not even present in the room when the assault took place.
"He should have intervened at some point but he failed to.
"It was a participation that was wholly out of character for him. He is a fundamentally decent young man, considerate and honest."
Maximen served time in prison for possession of drugs with intent to supply, and also has previous convictions for assault.
Catherine Spedding, defending Barnes, told Bristol Crown Court: "It is entirely unlike him to do something like this, he is not aggressive and certainly not violent."

“Willing to bet Mrs Spedding picked up a massive (tax payers) fee for failing to convince the jury he wasn't violent.”

“It's always nice to know that you have friends who will be there when you need them.”

“Mrs Spedding you appear to have been incorrect in your summary...”
