Ashton girls end winless run in style
The celebrations could be heard all over Bristol as Ashton Girls B Under-11s finally clinched their first victory – in 31 attempts!
And they did so in style, beating an under-strength Warmley Rangers 10-0 with Rosey Gubb netting five goals, Beccy Clemence bagging a brace and Gabby Derrick, Jess Howells and Jordan Taylor all getting on the scoresheet, to the delight of proud manager Justine Taylor.
It was a fitting first for Ashton, who went the whole of last season without winning a game, and then continued the downward spiral into the current campaign by losing all 10 of their opening fixtures this term.
The powerful Emma Sims scored a hat-trick as Brislington A Under-11s returned to winning ways with a 7-1 home victory over Bristol Ladies Union.
Chloe Smith showed plenty of skill to net twice while super strikes by Mia Williams and Sophie Allen completed victory for Brislington against spirited opponents.
Frampton Rangers A Under-10s earned a narrow 2-0 victory over a tough and well-organised Downend side with goals from Connie Lanham and Lauren Penny late in the first half.
Frampton Rangers B Under-10s emerged 1-0 winners over Ashton Girls in a competitive contest thanks to a fine individual goal from Ellie Michaels.
Alys Withers produced several great saves as Portishead Juniors Under-10s earned a hard-fought goalless draw with Longwell Green A.
Second-half keeper Chelsea Hill also kept Longwell Green at bay to ensure a clean sheet for Portishead.
Portishead Juniors Under-12s maintained their assault on the league title with a come-from-behind 4-2 victory against plucky Bristol Central.
Visitors Portishead started the game well but found themselves a goal down against the run of play after the hosts scored with their first attack.
Portishead's retaliatory pressure was rewarded as Annabelle Colston opened their account with her first goal of the game, only for Central to regain the lead direct from the resultant kick-off with a well-struck shot that gave keeper Alice Pritchard little chance.
Again Portishead responded well to draw level as Maisie Kincaid struck a right-foot shot across the goalkeeper and high into the top corner of target.
Jennie Mistry and Leanne Gainey both tested the home keeper before a shot from Colston caused confusion in the Central area and, as others stood still, Kincaid smashed the ball into the net to put her side ahead for the first time.
Portishead captain Ellie Grey then tried a shot from distance which was stopped by Colston on its way towards goal, and a quick swivel and finish from the in-form striker ensured the scoreline had a more realistic look about it at half-time.
Portishead's Abbie Taylor entered the fray at half-time to add support to her strikers and Cadie Dunn played her strongest game in defence for some time, and it took outstanding goalkeeping from the Central custodian to ensure a goalless second half.
Player of the match Fayth Mealing enjoyed her best game for Keynsham Town Under-12s, scoring a superb hat-trick against a battling Downend B side. Danielle Ash, Chloe Williams and Mollie Chapple were dominant in midfield, allowing Keynsham to play some super passing football.
Leading goalscorers Victoria Powell and Charlie-Anne Alford continued their impressive seasons with four goals each in the 11-0 romp.
Wotton Rovers Under-12s found themselves frustrated by a stubborn Downend defence before going on to seal a 4-0 success.
On a pitch that quickly turned into a swamp, Wotton's breakthrough came in the 12th minute, when Rosanna Blacker scored the only goal of the first half.
Her side continued to dominate the second period but wasted a host of chances, as well as being denied by excellent saves from Downend's Annaley Bennett.
Wotton finally managed to stretch their lead when Alice Baker struck twice, before Charlotte Walker grabbed the fourth to kill off Downend's resistance.
Backwell Athletic Under-12s put in a performance full of spirit to come away with a goalless draw against the higher-placed Thornbury Falcons.
Athletic rode their luck at times but defenders Sarah Wilson and Ele Moss were on top form and keeper Kathryn Howells pulled off some brilliant saves.
Backwell's Jen Atherton almost clinched victory at the death but saw her rising shot go just the wrong side of a post.
The sides also met in a friendly encounter, Kathryn Howells producing a sharp finish for the opening goal and setting up the lively Shannon Holloway to add the second from close range in a 2-0 Backwell victory.
Jasmine Roger's double helped AEK Boco Under-14s to a crucial 3-0 win over a very stubborn Westfield side. Rogers' poacher's instincts and Kelly Leat's fierce shot kept AEK firmly in the race for top spot.
