Ashley Vincent hoping for more after goal scoring run
Ashley Vincent is relishing the best goalscoring run of his Cheltenham Town career.
The 23-year-old cracked in a 48th minute penalty in the recent 6-3 defeat by Peterborough to reach five goals for the season, making him the Robins' joint-top scorer this season with Lloyd Owusu.
His spot-kick made him the sixth different player to try his luck from 12 yards after Michael Townsend, Owusu, Stuart Fleetwood, John Finnigan and Scott Murray.
But as none of them were on the pitch at the time, Vincent took the bull by the horns when he was felled by Charlie Lee.
"There were no other penalty takers on the pitch so I just grabbed the ball and scored," he said. "It was my first penalty for a long time.
"I got one in a shoot-out against Walsall a few years back, but the gaffer has been telling me to take responsibility so that's what I did."
Vincent's five goals this term have taken his total for the club to 12 in 121 starts and substitute appearances.
"I know I haven't scored enough goals and that has been my downfall," he said.
"But that's four in five games now and I am pleased with that – but I would have traded it in for a win."
After that penalty, Vincent was briefly top scorer in his own right, but Lloyd Owusu came off the bench to peg him back at five goals apiece.
"After the game Lloyd said he couldn't let me be top scorer on my own," said Vincent.
"It's good to have that competition.
"Anyone watching the Peterborough game got their money's worth as they were a good side with good forwards.
"I thought we had a chance of getting something and we did well in periods but they put away their chances well."
As well as his penalty, Vincent set up Hammond for his goal in that frantic seven-goal final half-hour.
"I put a few early balls in and one fell to Elvis," said Vincent. "At 3-2 then, we were back in the game, but they scored , then at 4-3 they did it again.
"Despite this game we have been doing well, which seems to have gone a bit unnoticed.
"We have got good players here but we are missing a few top players which has hit us hard."
