An exhibition of street art is being staged in the cells at the former Bridewell police station in Bristol's city centre.

Four French artists have each decorated a cell with their work under the general theme of "Justice".

They have also painted the walls of the corridors, and Mark Michaelson, a collector from New York, has displayed some of his collection of mugshots showing American citizens who have been arrested.

Artist C215, or Chris Guemy, 35, from Paris, said: "It has been interesting working in the cells. It has particular significance for me because I spent five years in prison myself.

"We are all here to try to express our feelings and views on justice. We are protesting about death sentences and blind justice."

Chris has spent two days working on the displays in the cells of the Long Arm Gallery along with fellow French artists Dan23 and Bruno Leyval, from Alsace, and MC1984, from Montpelier.

The Bridewell Street site has been transformed by ArtspaceLifespace, a project which works with owners of buildings awaiting planning permission and transforms the empty space into art and performance venues.

The group is occupying the complex under an agreement with developers Urban Splash.

The exhibition, organised by an urban artist collective called Steal From Work, opened last night. It is open Thursdays to Saturdays, noon-7pm, Sundays at noon-4pm and by appointment by calling 07794 331 424.
