A SCHEME that provides art classes for adults with mental health problems has won an award.

Artshine received the award from charity Arts and Health South West in recognition of their work with people in the inner city and east of Bristol.

The scheme is run by NHS Bristol's public health team and operates from 14 locations in the city, helping hundreds of patients every year to experience the joy of creating works of art while improving their wellbeing, reducing social isolation and helping them become more engaged with their local community.

Hugh Annett, Bristol's director of public health said: "Artshine is a fantastic example of how the creative arts can improve community engagement, positive mental health and wellbeing. For many Artshine participants the opportunity to make friends and engage with others in their community makes such a positive difference to their mental health and wellbeing. We are very pleased that Artshine has received this recognition, and that the project has won this award."
