The Bristol Post

CONSERVATIVE councillor Richard Eddy has called for police on the streets of Bristol to be routinely armed with Taser stun guns and says the time has come for a radical review of the forces' existing policy (The Post, Feb 19).

Mr Eddy I think is barking up the wrong tree on this issue. What next? Real guns with bullets?

If a criminal knows that a policeman or woman is likely to be armed, then the criminal will make sure he's more heavily armed than ever. And then what? More bloodshed, with Britain slowly but surely becoming as gun crazy a country as America.

London and Bristol could become a Bronx area, murders would increase at an alarming rate.

Why are murders on the increase? It's because a murderer knows that if he or she gets caught the worst that can happen is a jail sentence. They laugh at the system knowing that between them the government and judges have made the law an ass.

Arming the police with Taser guns or the real McCoy - guns with bullets - will not appease violence and murder on the streets of Bristol and across Britain but I believe more stringent laws may help.

“How can you have a "more stringent" law against murder? It's, er, against the law.

Unless, of course you mean stronger sentencing which, as any fule know, is not the same as the "law".”
