AN ANIMAL sanctuary in Barrow Gurney is holding an 80s night this week to help raise funds for drainage in its grass compounds.

Holly Hedge Animal Sanctuary opened its gates in March 1992 and is currently the home of 40 dogs, 48 cats and two rabbits, while there are more than 120 cats and dogs on the waiting list.

The sanctuary is hoping to raise around £12,000 for drainage in its three large grass compounds where the dogs exercise.

The sanctuary is hosting a family fun day at Ashton Court in September and an 80's night on February 17 at Long Ashton Village Hall.

Founder and chief executive, Pauline Leeson-Magry, said: "It is like a quagmire and the dog's carers get plastered in mud. This has a knock on effect as it means more washing of bedding and showering off muddy dogs and the excess of water is proving a nightmare."

It costs about £400,000 a year to run the animal shelter and around £47,000 is spent on vet bills and £18,000 on food and consumables.

There are 13 full-time employees in the office and kennels and around 100 volunteers.

Mrs Leeson-Magry had fostered animals in her own home for many years and used local boarding kennels and advertised for foster homes, as the local shelters were always full to capacity.

This soon became a voluntary full time occupation and there was a desperate need for another shelter as only so many could be accommodated in a normal home environment.

The sanctuary at Barrow Gurney was bought by animal lover Esme Berni who was spurred to help after learning about the work of the charity.

Mrs Leeson-Magry, said: "It was the luckiest day in the world when Esme Berni read a newsletter I had written and wanted to help.

"She bought the sanctuary for us to help animals in need and we haven't looked back."

Tickets for the 80s night on February 17 are £6 on the door or £5 when bought in advance from the sanctuary.
