A first aider who tried to save the life of a teenager stabbed to death in Bristol has told how an angry mob turned on him.

Shevon Wilson died in hospital after he was stabbed in the chest outside the World's End Inn on Clouds Hill Road, St George.

The teenager is believed to have been caught up in a brawl in the early hours of Saturday which locals claimed involved up to 18 people.

St John Ambulance volunteer Sam Taylor, 22, whose grandparents run the pub, tried to help Shevon but says he was prevented from doing so by the crowd.

''I looked out the window and could see what was going on. By the time I got outside I saw someone lying on the ground," he said.

"I could see he had a stab wound and I tried to get his heart going but people started screaming and shouting."

Sam also tried to help another teenager who was badly injured but was again verbally abused.

Mr Taylor said: "He (the other teenager) had a gash on his head and other injuries where he'd been hit."

Shevon, 17, was stabbed at about 1am on Saturday. He was taken to hospital but died soon after.

Police said three people had been arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing.

Two men, aged 18 and 20, have today been released on bail. The third man, aged 23, is being questioned by detectives.

Locals have told the Evening Post that a gang of teenagers had gathered outside the pub for most of the evening.

They said Shevon was a member of a gang from Speedwell called the Speedwell Crew, also known as Top Lot.

One 20-year-old regular at the World's End, who did not wish to be named, said: ''I've known him for a while but he's been hanging out with the wrong people recently.

"When he was younger he was a good kid. He'd definitely fallen in with the wrong crowd."

The World's End is run by John and Sally Taylor, both 67, who had closed the premises at 11pm.

Mrs Taylor said: "It was terrible out there, with bikes all over the pavement and so much animosity.

"They had previously been refused entry here and they were outside for hours, with a fight going on.

"I was just going to bed when I heard my Sam shout and he came running downstairs. He went out and was trying to resuscitate this young kid. He was trying to help him.

"This incident has brought things to a head. I know these youngsters haven't got anywhere to go and have nothing to do but something has got to be done to stop it happening again."

The road past the pub, between Holmes Hill Road and Whiteway Road, was closed by police while forensic teams examined the scene.

On Saturday crowds of youngsters started arriving to put flowers down where Shevon was stabbed. They also scrawled graffiti tributes on a nearby wall.

Avon and Somerset police Inspector Julie Bowle said: "At about 1am an altercation occurred outside the World's End pub.

"A 17-year-old was stabbed in the chest and later died in hospital of his injuries.

"A 23-year-old received hospital treatment and was later released into police custody to help police with their inquiries. Two other men, aged 18 and 20, are also being questioned in connection with this incident.

"A young man needlessly lost his life in this tragic incident. Our thoughts and condolences are with the family at this very difficult time.

"There are a number of lines of inquiry that the investigation team are pursuing to establish the motive behind this incident and it is imperative that we find out exactly what happened.

"A number of people were present outside the pub between 12.30am and 1.30am. It is crucial that we speak to all those people as they may have vital information."

Inspector Bowle said information could be given by phoning CID on 0845 456 7000 or the Crimestoppers number 0800 555111.
