A mother of two has complained about the "shoddy" resurfacing of her Bristol street which means she is constantly walking sticky tar into her home.

Karen Partridge, 44, of Montrose Park, Brislington, said the road was resurfaced during the first week of June.

But she claimed that despite several complaints during the past four months, the council had not responded.

Since the Evening Post contacted the council about Mrs Partridge's complaint, contractors were back in the road yesterday clearing up the loose chippings.

Mrs Partridge said they spent more time clearing up than they took to first resurface the road.

The original road surface was not stripped off and relaid – instead contractors sprayed wet tar which was covered with small chippings.

This is a method which the council uses to redress the surfaces of many roads in the city each summer.

The cost to resurface Montrose Park was £2,000, part of a £1.3 million programme of works which this year saw nearly 25 miles of road resurfaced.

Mrs Partridge, who has two young children, said: "It was a really shoddy job which means you can see two tramlines down the middle of the road where cars have driven while the tar was still wet.

"The workmen didn't even bother to close the road."

She said the wet tar meant they were walking tar and chippings into their home nearly four months later.

She said: "I've complained to the council several times but no one has ever called me back.

"What I can't understand is why do they bother resurfacing roads in this way? If it doesn't work – and it clearly doesn't – then why not spend the money on something more useful?"

Council spokeswoman Kate Hartas said: "Following the complaint from Mrs Partridge, a senior officer inspected the road on August 14 with the area technician and agreed that there were loose chippings but that the road was not sticky.

"The contractor was instructed to return and re-sweep the road.

"One of the difficulties is sweeping among the parked cars.

"On June 10, for example, there were 10 parked cars in the road, though residents had been notified to keep the road clear.

"In that situation, the sweeper swept between the cars but that did leave loose chippings where the cars were parked. Some chippings remain and will be the subject of a further sweep."

Mrs Partridge said a council officer has offered to meet her later this week to discuss the resurfacing and work carried out yesterday.

“Ian, there's no need to be offensive. She has every right to be annoyed. Children, pushchairs, bikes - they all pick up tar. If it'd been done propery this wouldn't be an issue. She didn't say she was walking on to the carpets, only 'into the house'. Give her a break and stop being so angry.”

“Stupid women, take your shoes off, then you wouldnt be walking tar and chippings into your house. I cannot understand people who wear shoes in their own home as there are plenty of other things you can inadvertently bring into your home via footwear.”
