Discounts will be available at scores of independent shops in Broadmead on Saturday when small retailers celebrate American Independence Day.

Hair salons, fashion stores and jewellers in Broadmead and The Mall Bristol will be among those offering discounts for one day only.

As part of the event, there will be a free prize draw with a chance for Broadmead visitors to win £150 of vouchers to spend in any independent store.

In keeping with the American theme, the first 250 lucky shoppers will receive free blueberry muffins.

Jo Hawkins, from the Broadmead management team, said: "Not many people realise that among the big brands and well-known retailers, Broadmead and The Mall Bristol boasts more than 40 independent stores.

"This weekend is an opportunity for us to raise the profile of these exciting, and very eclectic retailers."

The main event will take place outside Marks & Spencer, however activity will move throughout Broadmead including The Mall and The Arcade.

The event takes place from 10am and 4pm.

“Laudable and beneficial to shoppers it may be but WHY?

It's mainly due to the financial melt down in the US, the growth of international trading and the UKs' close links with the US that retailers, large and small, are suffering today.

It is too late to ignore the US but the only reason I can see for celebrating American Independence Day is to celebrate the fact that we got rid of them in 1776.

We should move closer to our European allies and loosen the ties with America.”
