Cheltenham Town boss Martin Allen admits his chances of building a side capable of challenging for promotion from Coca-Cola League Two next season depends on the budget he is given to work with.

The Robins' miserable season continued with a 4-0 defeat at Allen's previous club Leicester City on Saturday.

The League One leaders scored twice in each half to extend Cheltenham's winless run to 16 games and even Allen now appears to have accepted relegation.

"We will have to see what the budgets are in the summer," Allen said when asked if he was confident of masterminding an immediate return to League One.

"I will have to make the best of the budget that I get to find the players to be competitive next season and that's what I will do.

"I have done it in the past and I have worked with a shoestring budget and I have had to go to car boot sales to get footballers on free transfers, work with them, building a team spirit and a unit."

Allen has already lost Alex Russell and Lloyd Owusu in the is not in a position to turn down approaches for other members of their squad as they look to reduce the wage bill.

Ashley Vincent's departure is imminent, with MK Dons leading the chase for his signature and he may not be the last to leave.

"We have had enquiries from several clubs and we will see how it evolves this week, but it looks like Ashley will be leaving," Allen said.

"I offered him a new contract a month ago which he rejected. I tried to persuade him to stay, but he has a chance to earn a lot more money at another club.

"It's difficult within the dressing room because agents are working to get players out and get them better deals and I can't do anything about that."
