Airlift drama as boy, 9, falls off swing at Winscombe summer camp
A nine-year-old boy had to be airlifted to hospital after falling off a swing and knocking himself out at a summer camp in Winscombe.
The incident happened just before 5pm on Thursday at Barton Camp.
A paramedic from Weston-super-Mare initially attended the scene and then called for support from the Great Western Air Ambulance.
The helicopter landed alongside the boy from London, who was staying at the camp as part of a bible club.
He was then flown to Frenchay Hospital for treatment.
Great Western Ambulance Service paramedic and clinical team leader, Andy Cleverdon, was first on scene in a rapid-response vehicle.
He said: "The helicopter was the right tool for this job – we had a land ambulance in attendance as well, but access was down a narrow and bumpy lane.
"The caller reported that the lad had knocked himself out for a couple of minutes.
"Although he had regained consciousness by the time we arrived, he was complaining of a neck injury, so it was a safer and more comfortable option to transfer him by air."
"The police were also on scene to ensure the landing site was clear for the helicopter.
"This was an example of excellent communication between the crews on the ground, the police and our control room which meant the patient was transferred to Frenchay, which specialises in head trauma, from a remote location very quickly."
