STAR MATCH: Aek Boco beat Hartcliffe in cup clash
AEK Boco ran out convincing winners over Hartcliffe in the first round of the Bristol Premier Combination Cup.
Paul Coles netted the opening goal and Luke House converted a penalty just before half-time to double their advantage.
Jamie Johnson made it 3-0 after the break, Coles grabbed his second of the match and Nathan Bell rounded off the scoring in superb style.
Delighted Boco manager Robert Johnson said: "We passed the ball around well, kept our shape and I thought we were strong at the back."
The first half was dominated by Boco, and in particular by their two central midfielders, House and Bell. They ran the show and kept Hartcliffe out of the game.
It was House who created the first goal after receiving the ball on the halfway line and moving forwards unchallenged.
With plenty of time and space, he played a lovely ball to Mikey Golding, who flicked it for Coles to crash a first-time shot home on the volley. It was a good move and a great finish.
The second goal came from the penalty spot. Golding made a good run into the area before being fouled and House stepped up to place the spot- kick into the top corner of the net.
Hartcliffe enjoyed their best spell in the first 15 minutes of the second half after switching to a 3-5-2 system.
This gave them a higher percentage of possession than they had enjoyed before the break and they came into the game a lot more.
Boco responded by matching their formation and, although the home team continued to have more possession, the outstanding Boco defence did not afford them any real chances.
Hartcliffe conceded again after a poor clearance fell to Johnson. He played it up to Golding and continued his run to receive a return headed pass from his team-mate before taking a touch and striking a fine shot past Hartcliffe goalkeeper Gary Nott.
After the goal, Boco started to dominate again and Coles made it 4-0 with his second goal of the match.
Golding set it up with the pass of the match, chipping the ball over the Hartcliffe defence to find Coles, whose half-volley flashed into the top right corner of the net.
Moments later, it was 5-0. Golding had a shot saved but collected the rebound and played the ball back to Bell on the edge of the area. The Boco midfielder controlled it well before hitting a stunning shot into the top left corner. It was an unstoppable strike leaving Nott with no chance.
Overall, it was a brilliant performance from Boco, who fully deserved their win. It's fair to say that 5-0 was not flattering either. The biggest difference between the teams was in the midfield where the partnership between House and Bell was superb.
Bell was the more defensive of the two and protected his defence magnificently. He won everything in the air and got stuck in with his tackles, cleaning up any problems. Bell's positioning gave House the opportunity to play the creative role. However, their communication and knowledge of each other's game's allowed them to switch roles when needed.
Quite simply the duo were too good for Hartcliffe, but the whole Boco team deserved credit. They defended well and their strikers were a constant threat.
