OASIS Academy John Williams's results lifted the school above the Government's minimum standard for the first time in its history.

Forty per cent of the students at the school in Hengrove achieved five A*-C grades including English and maths – taking it above the "floor target" of 35 per cent.

The school recorded an 11 per cent rise in the number of pupils reaching that standard, compared with its results from 2010.

It has now seen the number of students hitting the benchmark more than double since becoming an academy in September 2008, when only 18 per cent of children achieved the target.

Among the high achievers at the school in Petherton Gardens was Paige Williams, who notched up four A*s and five As.

The 16-year-old, who lives in Hengrove, hopes to go on to study English at Bristol University.

She will take A levels in English literature, English language and Spanish at the City of Bristol College in College Green.

Paige said: "I did OK and got what I needed. I'm pleased."

Vashti Kashian-Smith, who joined the school at the start of Year 11 having been educated in Spain, also achieved A* and A grades in all of her subjects.

The academy, which moved into its new £20 million home last September, has now achieved three consecutive years of improved results.

The school's principal Rebecca Clark said: "I am absolutely delighted for the year group who have achieved our best-ever results.

"They worked so hard and have been justly rewarded. This is a team effort, and I would like to thank our students, their parents, and our staff for their unstinting support and hard work."
