Gary Green has questioned whether some of his Bristol Academy players lack the commitment to stop the club's slide down the FA Premier League National Division table.

Bristol head into this Sunday's important home game against Chelsea at Oaklands Park, Almondsbury in need of points after dropping out of the top eight for the first time this season.

But manager Green is unsure what sort of squad he will have to pick from because a clutch of players have been away taking part in various international tournaments.

"I really do have to question the commitment of some of our players and whether they really want to be here," said Green.

"Some of the girls weren't available for our last league game against Nottingham Forest, but it was strange how they were fit enough to play international football two days later.

"One or two have only played a handful of games for us this season, but then they go abroad to various tournaments and manage to play a lot of games in just a few days. My betting is some of them will then come back and say they are injured.

"If some of them aren't going to show the commitment they should, I will look to give one or two of the younger players the chance to step up to the plate."

Green admits the Academy need to take something from the Chelsea game after slipping to fourth from bottom.

"We are fortunate that Nottingham Forest and Fulham look like going down. Liverpool are just above them and we face them in a few weeks, so that will be a must-win," said Green.

Keynsham Town gave their push for the Southern Division title a boost with a 2-1 win at Brighton which left them just three points behind leaders Charlton with a game in hand.

Frankie Stone gave the visitors an early lead, but they were down to 10 players because of injuries by the time Megan Priest put Brighton level after 42 minutes. Hari Sabic grabbed Keynsham's winner 11 minutes from time.

Goals from Laura Bray and Leighanna Slocombe could not prevent Weston St Johns dropping into the bottom two of the SW Combination after a 6-2 defeat at Chesham United. They were leapfrogged by Swindon Town, who were 2-1 winners over Team Bath.

In the SW Women's League, Bristol Ladies Union finally returned to winning ways in the Premier Division as goals from Rachel Creedon, Adele Cordy and Vic Veedart gave them a 3-0 win over Taunton Town. Stoke Lane's game at Larkhall was called off late because of a waterlogged surface.

Oldland Abbotonians extended their unbeaten record in Division One (North) with a late 2-1 victory at Swindon Town Reserves. Gemma Summers and a last-minute goal from Sarah Clarkson fired the Abbots to victory.

Downend Flyers also enjoyed a 2-1 away win at Swindon, this time against the Spitfires, thanks to goals from Katie Michael and Debbie Stacey.

“Perhaps Bristol Academy is not so appealing as Bristol Rovers. It makes it sound like a college side rather than a ladies team associated with a Football League club!!”
