supporting brain injury survivors and their families in the areas of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North

Somerset and North East Somerset.

It is estimated that across the UK there are

well over 500,000 people living with permanent disabilities as a result of a

head injury.

Headway Bristol is a

local charity based at Frenchay

Hospital.  We provide support and services to brain

injury survivors, their families, friends and carers in the areas of Bristol, South Gloucestershire, North

Somerset and North East Somerset.

Brain injury can be caused by a variety of

different means; head injury (caused by an assault, a sports injury or road

traffic accident for example) or a brain haemorrhage, a stroke, a brain tumour

or a disease such as meningitis.

The effects of a brain injury are devastating both

for the brain injury survivor and for their loved ones.  After a brain injury there are both physical

and psychological changes; physical disabilities, thinking and learning

difficulties, memory loss, changes in behaviour and personality.

Headway Bristol

ensures that when someone's life is turned upside down by a brain injury they

get the support and help that they need.

We provide a wide range of services to help both the brain injury

survivor and their loved ones.

  • On Tuesday 15th

May users of Headway Bristol's services will be raising funds for the

charity through a table top sale held at our day centre at Frenchay Hospital.  The sale will run from 11am to 2pm.

  • Wednesday

16th May the Headway Bristol information stand will be at the Redwood

    Restaurant at Frenchay

Hospital.  Come along between 11am - 2pm to meet staff,

volunteers and users of our services.

Find out more about brain injury and Headway Bristol and take a

    chance on our fundraising tombola.

  • One of the

themes of this year's Action for Brain Injury Week is to highlight the

inspiring work of carers.  Brain injury doesn't just affect

individuals; it can transform the lives of entire families. Emotional and

behavioural changes in the individual can affect relationships and the

    dynamic of the family.  Caring

for someone with a brain injury can require a great deal of patience and

sacrifice and so on Thursday 17th May we recognise the role of

carers with a balloon launch on Frenchay Common.  If you would like to take part please

contact us to buy a balloon for a minimum donation of £2.  At 11am we will be sending up into the

sky a festival of balloons carrying special messages of thanks to

carers.  It's sure to be an amazing

sight.  To make the event even more

fun users of our services adopt a fancy dress theme for the event, this

year they will be dressing up as characters from film and TV!

  • On Thursday there will also be a table top sale

run by users of our Withywood Centre, South Bristol

    outpost services.

  • On Friday 18th

May Action for Brain Injury Week culminates in Hats4Headway.  An amazing end to an amazing week will

    see people all across Bristol

don their wackiest headgear to increase awareness of brain injury and

raise funds to support the work of Headway Bristol.  Anyone can take part in this day; schools,

colleges, nursery groups, local businesses are all getting involved.  Donate £1 and wear your best hat all day

    long!
