Five fresh-faced youngsters are taking their first steps on the careers ladder as apprentices at Merlin Housing Society.

The teenagers are the first of ten apprentices that the society will be taking on this year. They were selected from more than 70 applicants for the roles and started work on Monday.

Lewis Wyatt and Jack Garland are apprentice carpenters, Sam Day and Jamie Barry are apprentice plumbers, while Jason Bradford is working as an apprentice electrician. They've each been assigned a mentor who will monitor their progress over the three years of their apprenticeships.

For four days a week, the apprentices will join staff responsible for maintaining and improving Merlin's housing stock. They will spend one day a week at college, working towards their NVQs.

Head of Contracting Services Peter Carnegie said: "At a time when youth unemployment is running high we're delighted to welcome our new apprentices to Merlin. Apprenticeships offer a valuable route into employment for young people, giving them the chance to learn and earn money at the same time. We're a growing business and recognise our responsibility to provide opportunities for young people and will be taking on ten apprentices every year."

"We were really impressed with the quality of the applicants and I'm sure Lewis, Jack, Sam, Jamie and Jason will fit in really well. Hopefully the skills they learn over the next three years will provide them with everything they need for a lifelong career."

Another two apprentices are due to start work at Merlin next month and a further three will be recruited early next year.
