Controversial plans for 500 new homes in Thornbury have been given the go ahead.

Outline planning permission was granted last night at a South Gloucestershire planning committee meeting.

The area in question is about a mile from the town centre and extends from the back of The Castle secondary school towards Butt Lane.

The developer and the council need to sign a Section 106 agreement before the decision is issued in the next few weeks.

A spokesperson for the council said: "This is an outline planning permission and therefore the applicant will need to apply to the council for detailed consent for the reserved matters for all phases."
