FEW people would be able to name, and much less sing, them all but 49 writers have chosen Bristol to feature in their song titles.

In Bristol With a Pistol, People of St Paul's, Bristol, Recruit Bristol and Bury Me in Bristol, are just some of the songs which feature on the list created by the Performing Rights Society for Music.

The company took the top 30 towns and cities in the UK, excluding London, and analysed the most inspirational places.

Scottish city Glasgow topped the charts with 119 songs written about it and Edinburgh followed closely behind.

Bristol took 9th place above Newcastle but just below York and Brighton.

Guy Fletcher, chairman of PRS for Music, said: "Songwriters feed off their inspiration and this could be anything from a feeling or an object or place."

The song list features One For Bristol City, written by Guy Fletcher, and made famous by West Country favourites The Wurzels.

The song, which was first released in 1976, is the official club anthem for Bristol City Football Club.

A newly recorded version of this song reached number 66 in the UK charts in September 2007. It is often played at the final whistle at Ashton Gate if City win.

Another song, Bristol Blues, Bristol Buses, by Keith Christmas was covered by folk singer and comedy raconteur Fred Wedlock. The Bristol comedy artist, who died in 2010, also penned his own tributes to the city with The Bristol Vet and TV AM Bristol Song.

Links to the city's maritime past were a common feature for songs such as Avery and the Merchants of Bristol by Paul Francis McNamara, The Bristol Sailorman, by John Michael Kirkpatrick, and folk singer June Tabor's Three Sailors of Bristol City.

There are several cities named after Bristol in the USA and these are also credited in some of the songs.

PRS for Music represents 85,000 songwriters, composers and music publishers in the UK. The not-for-profit organisation ensures creators are paid whenever their music is played, performed or reproduced.

“There are a few songs inspired by the town itself that I know of. There's Barry Manilow with Clifton Triangle, of course, and The Drifters with Under the Broadwalk. Pink Floyd - Arnos Vale, The Jacksons - I Want Welsh Back, Billy Joel - West Town Girl, Hanson and MMMMShed.

Moving out a bit, there's Severn Beach by Martha and the Muffins; Alveston by Glen Campbell; Sinead O'Connor and Nothing Compares with Chew; Steps and Five, Six, Seven, Yate, possibly.

Not 100% sure about some of the above, though.”
