A Stoke Gifford man found with £2,000 worth of cocaine has been handed a community order.

Kevin Murray bought the Class A drug from his supplier, thinking he was getting just £200 worth, Bristol Crown Court heard.

Police found the stash when they pulled his car over.

Murray, 43, of Sandringham Road, pleaded guilty to possessing cocaine.

Judge David Ticehurst, who ordered Murray to carry out 150 hours of unpaid work, told him: "You're a very foolish man.

"You're a hard worker, you have children and a devoted partner, and you have said about the way you used to look after your children.

"You went off the rails and became involved in drug-taking."

The judge stressed he was sentencing Murray on the basis that he had admitted buying drugs simply for his own use.

The judge warned Murray that, if he committed further offences, he would go to prison.

Ray Tully, for Murray, stressed to the court his client had bought what he thought was £200 worth of cocaine just for himself.

The court heard Murray was of previous good character, married, with two youngsters.

Mr Tully said Murray had been a good family man until illness of a family member had "derailed him".

He said a report by the Probation Service on Murray concluded he represented a low risk of reoffending.
