A weather warning has been put out in Bristol with more heavy snow forecast.

Around 2-5cm is set to fall in the city and surrounding areas on Thursday and Friday.

Sarah Holland, spokeswoman for the Met Office, said: "Temperatures are going to be around freezing, or maybe 1°C throughout Thursday and Friday.

"People should make sure they check local travel news and be aware of what's happening and take precautions. There will be ice on the road because the snow will be mixed with wintry showers and sleet.

"It's going to stay around for most of the day and into the night. Most of Friday will stay the same with temperatures at around 1°C and sleety snow showers."

Bristol City Council is taking precautions and treating the city's main roads with tonnes of grit.

All A roads, public transport routes and major residential roads are gritted and/or salted but council officials are asking people to take extra care on minor residential roads.

The council's budget for gritting is around £300,000 a year.

South Gloucestershire Council's Street Care service has also been busy gritting the district's roads ahead of the snow showers.

Mark King, head of Street Care, said: "We have treated 300 miles of our network including the area's main roads, commuter routes and at least one route into every village or populated area.

"In doing so we proactively deploy 12 gritting lorries and use approximately 80 tonnes of salt per run.

"We have had a very busy start to 2009 so far and to date we have used approximately 4,000 tonnes of salt on the roads.

"To date all roads have remained open in the district."

Adrian Tink, spokesman for the RAC, said if people had to travel they should take food and clothing, charge their phone, check for local travel information, leave lots of time and tell someone where they were going.

"The key to driving in ice and snow is treating the controls in the car gently and going a little slower, as well as giving other road users more space," he said.

"Stopping distances in ice and snow are 10 times longer.

"Make sure you check your breaks, lights, oil, water, wipers and windscreen wash before you set out."
