1. Rimandos, Gloucester Road
This Coffee Lounge Soft Play is geared up for parents to relax with a ‘proper’ cup of coffee and lunch, while the under 5s have fun in the soft play room - all the floors and walls are padded to cushion any tumbling toddlers. There is a ball pit, a distorted mirror and a huts and tunnel system incorporating steps and a wedge slide for the toddlers to explore. Parents can either join in with play or sit and relax having a coffee whilst watching their child on the CCTV screens. Open Monday, Wednesday-Friday 9.15am-5pm and Saturdays 9.15am-3pm. Portico Play is more than just a café – infact it is more like a play area with a market place, postbox, mini table and chairs and toys galore, with a café attached. Open Monday- Saturday, 9am-5pm. Sunday: private hire parties only. Under 6 months: free (but a compulsory £2 drink purchase is payable on entry). 6-12 months: 99p. 1 year upwards - £3. Multisaver ticket: 4 entries for £10 (£2.50 per child and you can use it with friends). £20 ticket for 9 entries (£2.22 per entry).
3. Zion, Bedminster
Zion is a community art space and café that runs an under-fives morning every Tuesday to Saturday from 10am. There is a children’s area with lots of toys to keep your little ones happy and buggy park to make life a bit easier for parents and carers. Zion provides all the facilities you may need: a microwave to warm bottles, children-friendly healthy snacks and drinks, a nappy station, highchairs, a buggy park for user-friendly access. There is also has a community garden that is open to all visitors to enjoy. Zion run regular events for unders 5s.
4. Bocabar, Paintworks
If you are looking for somewhere hip to hang out with your baby then Bocabar at Paintworks in Bedminster has to be it. This place excudes style and coolness and there is lots of space for prams. Relax in the big soft sofas and soak up the lovely atmosphere. There is also a box of children’s books to entertain your little darling. Great for Sunday brunches. Open Monday-Thursday, 10am-midnight . Friday-Saturday 10am-2am and Sunday 10am-11pm.
St Werburghs City Farm is again more than just a café. With free entry to the farm, you can combine a nice cuppa and a bite to eat from the lovely local organic food menu at the friendly café, with a trip to the farm for the little ones. There is a range of livestock, a community garden, an adventure playground – perfect if you also have older children to entertain. The farm site is open every day of the year including all bank holidays. Summer 9am-5pm Winter 9am-4pm. The farm cafe is open everyday except Tuesdays.
This is a handy one to know about if you are in the centre of Bristol. It is on the ground floor of the At-Bristol building, with lovely views across Millennium Square and the water features. There is a small soft play area for the babies and toddlers and highchairs, free bottle-warmign facilities, children’s meals and healthy choice lunch boxes as well as Fairtrade coffee and teas and a wide selection of hot and cold drniks, freshly cooked meals , sandwiches and snacks – locally sourced where possible. 10am-6pm on weekends, bank holidays and daily during Bristol school holidays. 10am-5pm on weekdays (Bristol school term-time only).
Another café supporting Fair Trade is the Cairns Road Baptist Church café. It is a non-profit making café to give parents, carers and others the chance to relax over good food and coffee. There is a large play area for babies and toddlers, with a whole host of toys that will help the development of your little one, while you catch up with friends. As well as very tasty cakes, drinks and snacks they also cater for toddlers offering a child’s lunch deal for a reasonable price. Open during term time Mon 9am-2pm, Wed 9-1.30pm and Friday 10.15-2pm. This spacious Café Bistro is very popular with parents and carers. The local NCT – UK’s largest charity for parents – hold their meetings here as the baby facilities are very good. They have at least nine high chairs and children’s menu for the little ones, and big squashy sofas and tub chairs for breastfeeding mothers. There is also room through the back that has books, toys and mats for toddlers to play with. The café bistro has a lovely atmosphere and serves a wide range of hot and cold drinks (and is also licensed) and a whole host of snacks from sandwiches to more substantial meals like pizza and lasagne. The Breakfast Menu is available all day too.
Grounded is an independent Bristol-based café bar – with one in Redfield and one in Bedminster. They both boast baby changing facilities and have been nominated for welcome places for mums to breast feed. The café bars are geared up for little ones as they believe ‘kids are all part of our lives and shouldn't be excluded’. Families are very welcome and they provide games and toys in their toy box as well as some colouring-in books on the book swap shelves. They serve all you would expect from a café bar and use local suppliers such as John Sheppard Butchers in St Phillips, Herberts Bakeries in St Werburghs, Clifton Coffee and Luscombe for our organic drinks.
A great place to spend an hour or two – or even a day out, awarded a Mums’ Choice Award, Grimbsy Farm has a variety of animals, a playground and a picnic area as well as the café which serves. You can see horses, cows, sheep, pygmy goats, chickens, ducks, pot-bellied pigs, exotic birds, rabbits and guinea pigs. The farm is open every day from 9am ‘til dusk throughout the year and the café is open Mon/Tue/Thurs 10am-4pm, Fri 11am-4pm, Sat/Sun 12pm–4pm. Admission and parking is free on site.
