1,500-year-old treasured cross stolen in Bristol raid
A 1,500-year-old silver cross has been stolen in a burglary in Bristol.
The silver Coptic Cross, dated 500 AD and similar to the one pictured, would have been made for an early Christian in Egypt and was one of a number of items of jewellery of great sentimental value stolen in the raid on a house in Salthrop Road, Bishopston.

A silver pocket watch with the name Robert Thomas engraved on it was also taken.
PC Steven Phillipou said: "These items were of huge sentimental value to the victim having been handed down from earlier generations. Much of the jewellery is irreplaceable because of the memories it holds and the age of the items taken.
"The cross is quite distinctive and I would appeal for anyone who has been offered it for sale or knows where it is to get in touch. We are committed to returning the jewellery to the owner."
The raid took place last month but details were only released yesterday. Anyone with information should call the police on 0845 456 7000 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

“It was a silver & gold shield cycling medal (1914) & my Granfathers name was Thomas Roberts, not Robert Thomas as printed.
The burglary took place on the 19th february & Ive yet to see a police officer. The only one I've spoken to was the one who phoned me to find out how old the cross was for your article. Ihave just found out it was in the paper from a friend , so looked it up to see what you printed.
Does anything get spotted through your articles? If so perhaps you should correct your mistake(or the mistake of the officer). Thankyou.”
