More than 1,000 homes in Ashton could be left without water next month during a renovation of the mains.

Bristol Water's £900,000 project will get under way at the start of November, helping to stop leaks, improve water quality and provide a more secure supply.

Householders could face up to 12 hours without water between 8am and 8pm on a pre-specified day during the 20-week project.

But Bristol Water stressed it expected the work to be completed in under 12 hours, minimising inconvenience to residents.

Spokesman Jeremy Williams said: "We apologise for any temporary inconvenience that may be caused during these essential works.

"We will try to keep any disruption to a minimum and we ask customers to bear in mind that the work is for their long-term benefit."

The area affected stretches from Luckwell Road in the south to Durnford Street in the north, and Duckmoor Road in the west to Ashton Gate Road and North Street in the east.

Information packs will be sent to the 1,100 homes likely to be affected, explaining to customers how the project will be carried out and what impact it may have on them.

Residents will receive one week's written notice prior to work starting in their roads.

They will also be given green warning cards to indicate the day the interruption will take place.

Water supplies might also be interrupted for short periods while work is carried out on other sections of the scheme, most likely early in the morning and later in the day.

The project, which is being carried out for Bristol Water by Daniel Contractors, will see 4,700m of mains pipe work being renovated to cut water losses and improve quality and pressure.

It will also see the replacement of metallic connecting pipes that are prone to corrosion and leakage.

Bristol Water is warning residents to be alert to the threat of bogus callers during the renovation period.

It said that all genuine employees would have an ID card with their name, photo, company logo and a phone number to confirm who the caller is.
